The main reason OH would be in a chemical equation would be for basic solutions. In general always use H2O to add oxygen. If it is a basic solution, what I usually do is wait until everything is balanced according to an acidic solution, then I add an OH for every H+ on both sides, and cancel out the water to reach the balanced equation.
