Studying for finals?
Does anyone have any tips for studying for finals? I'm so stressed and there seems to be so much to do, I don't know where to start :(

Re: Studying for finals?
I think the best thing to do is review the textbook problems. It's almost impossible to redo every single one of them, so I recommend just doing one problem of each type from the topics we've already been tested on (unless there's a specific concept that you're struggling with) and all of the ones from the new material. I'd also review the notes you've taken this quarter (especially the conceptual parts) and attend as many review sessions as possible!

If you have a group of people to study with, what really helps me is talking through some of the theoretical concepts with friends! I'm also planning on working through the outlines again and maybe rewatching lectures on 2x speed just to jog my memory?

This is such a good idea! I was planning to redo many of the sapling questions too!

Re: Studying for finals?
Definitely finish the textbook problems in the outlines and attend as many review sessions possible this week! Dr. Lavelle has the list of review sessions on his website, or you can see it through this link: https://lavelle.chem.ucla.edu/wp-conten ... ssions.pdf

I agree with everything that's been said! Going to UA review sessions is really helpful as well as reviewing textbook problems.

Re: Studying for finals?
I'm planning on attending multiple sessions for each topic this week, especially the topics I am struggling with (thermo and electrochem). I also recommend going over the textbook problems and going through Sapling as well. I am definitely extremely nervous too! You are not alone :)

Re: Studying for finals?
I definitely agree with the others. Try to attend as many sessions when it comes to the TA review sessions this week. There are repeated topics but each TA presents the info differently so if you feel you need to focus on a certain section, I definitely recommend going to different sessions that cover that same topic.

I feel you! I'm so stressed as well but we got this! For this final I plan on looking over the outlines and review sapling and hw problems which is what I've been doing for the past exams.

Re: Studying for finals?
I am definitely planning on going to as many UA review sessions as possible, and I highly recommend these sessions since the UAs do a great job covering the material and answering as many questions as possible. Reviewing textbook problems and lecture notes is also a good idea, and spread out your time studying over the next week so you don't get too stressed. Good luck!

Re: Studying for finals?
I feel the same as well. I have been so stressed out over this final but I have been trying to go to all the review sessions I can. I think working through the textbook problems and going back through the sapling homework also will be good review as other people have suggested!
Re: Studying for finals?
If you had to choose between the TA review sessions and the UA review sessions for the sake of time, which did you find to be more helpful? I want to attend as many review sessions as possible but don't think that I could realistically fit both in my schedule.

I would definitely attend more UA sessions because these are directed by students who have previously and recently taken the course, so they can provide more insights IMO! I would highly recommend Michael's, Julia's and Justin's sessions, but their worksheets are also available on their respective Google drives if you can't make it.

Re: Studying for finals?
Like other people have said, I think review sessions and textbook/sapling are your top priority.
Something else I like to do is actively read my lecture notes. I find this helps solidify the concepts for me and just gives some more confidence going into the exam!

Re: Studying for finals?
Honestly, I'm just going through the textbook problems again. I know this may seem like a lot, but it's very helpful! Also, attend some UA workshops/do some worksheets if you can!

Re: Studying for finals?
The review sessions will definitely be worth your time as the UAs are very good at helping you understand the concepts. In addition, going through the textbook problems and Sapling hw problems were also very helpful to me for past exams.

Re: Studying for finals?
Personally, the UA sessions as well as just the practice problems on the outlines have been extremely helpful in understanding and practicing concepts.

Re: Studying for finals?
I'm going to review sessions, reviewing discussion slides (which have textbook problems), and reviewing sapling.
Re: Studying for finals?
I am going to UA review sessions, doing textbook problems, and reviewing the problems we did for hw on sapling. Sapling is nice because it provides an explanation on how to do the problems.
Re: Studying for finals?
Im going to review sessions, doing textbook questions from previous sections I struggled with and watching online videos to help me better understand some topics.

Re: Studying for finals?
I have found the review sessions taught by the UAs to be very helpful! They manage to go over everything in each unit step by step and I really understand them!! I highly recommend you go :)

Honestly, the review session really help you feel comfortable with old topics that you haven't covered in a while, so as long as you go to as many of those, you should be fine!

All the review sessions are super helpful. I find it very helpful to also go through the textbook sections and read the ones on the outline and then try the problems

Re: Studying for finals?
Definitely the textbook problems, and just making sure you know how to approach each of the questions! Sometimes the concepts can be a little tricky for me, so I like to make really brief study guides for each outline, which really helps and makes it all less overwhelming! I know flashcards also helps a lot with more conceptual questions too!

Re: Studying for finals?
I would definitely take advantage of the UA and TA review sessions that are left! They're really helpful for explaining confusing topics and some of them even go through past exam questions. Other than that, studying with friends is pretty helpful (as long as you stay focused).

Re: Studying for finals?
If you are on a time cramp, I would suggest problems and trying to find the process to solve it for each problem without actually plugging in the numbers, and then check on the answer key if you have the process right. Having the background knowledge of seeing how differently worded problems are solved can be extremely helpful.

Re: Studying for finals?
For anything that requires some type of math, I've always found that the best way is to just do more practice problems. Keep working through them until you feel comfortable enough with the material. Although, make sure to take breaks too. Grinding out too many problems could burn you out before the final.

Re: Studying for finals?
I suggest going through all the sapling and textbook problems since Dr. Lavelle mentioned that he would include some of these questions on the final. Also, it might help to read the textbook to prepare for conceptual questions. Good luck!!

Before the final do some meditation or some other way to calm yourself cause it'll definitely help!

I am in the exact same position, there is just so much to do that I don't even know how to approach it. I have struggled all quarter so I need to review everything EXTENSIVELY but I just don't know how to go about it all :(.

Re: Studying for finals?
So far, I've been going through all of the textbook problems, and I'm placing emphasis on problems that I've had trouble with in the past (which I noted in my notes as I did them the first time). I'm also going to review UA worksheets later today! We got this y'all :DD

I would say to review all the outlines since they specifically list out what we need to know.

Re: Studying for finals?
Other than asking for help from TAs or going to review sessions, I would recommend going over textbook problems. As someone else mentioned above, the amount of textbook problems on the syllabus can be overwhelming, especially since the final is comprehensive. I like to focus first on the topics I feel less confident about, without doing more than a couple problems at a time for each topic. This way, I can be sure to practice the things I need to do the most work on, but I'm also not spending too much time on anything in particular.

Re: Studying for finals?
Since the style and format of the final are pretty similar to that of the midterms, I strongly suggest starting UA sessions and repeatedly going over textbook questions, especially those you struggle with. There are so many hours of sessions and guides that you should check out. Good luck!

Re: Studying for finals?
Personally I'm mainly focusing on the later quarter topics and the topics that I really struggled on throughout the quarter. I am starting to work on textbook problems and I find that The Organic Chemistry Tutor on youtube is very helpful for explaining the overview of concepts.

For me, I would go through the textbook problems and also read the sapling explanations.
