Textbook Problem 6K.3d

Postby Adam_Ventura_1H » Fri Mar 12, 2021 4:13 pm

I am confused on how to solve part d of this question since HCLO and Cl2 both contain Cl. Wondering if someone has solved this and can explain.

Question: Balance each of the following skeletal equations by using oxidation and reduction half-reactions. All the reactions take place in acidic solution. Identify the oxidizing agent and reducing agent in each reaction.
D.) Cl2(g) -> HCLO(aq) + Cl2(g)

To just sum up what was stated in the post above^, you would have the following work:
2 H2O + Cl2 --> 2 HOCl + 2 H+ + 2e-
2 H2O + 2Cl2 + 2e- --> 2HOCl + 2H+ + 2Cl- + 2e-
H2O + Cl2 -> HOCL + H+ + Cl-
