Resonance

Postby Austin Nieto 2L » Wed Nov 01, 2023 2:17 pm

In terms of Resonance, I just wanted to clarify whether there is one correct/preferable Lewis structure when it has different equivalent locations, or are they all the same in the sense that it doesn't matter WHATSOEVER in regards to the Lewis structure.

Hey, I believe there isn't really one correct Lewis structure because all resonance structures of a molecule are equally correct since the true molecule is a hybrid (or combo) of all the resonance structures.

Hello,

Resonance structures can never correctly represent the molecules' actual state. They have different structures and different formal charges. So they can have different appearances but the resonance hybrid is the one that correctly represents the electron distribution in the molecule.
