Quantum Spin Number

So I know that the sign of the Quantum Spin Number defines the direction of the spin, but why is the Quantum Spin Number only equal to +/- 1/2 instead of being +/- 1?
I believe that the number 1/2 comes from some equation or calculations that we don't cover in this course. From what I've read, it's pretty complicated and I don't think it's important for us to know why, just to remember that it's +/- 1/2.
