Homework 1.13

I worked out most of the problem and I got 3.28984 x10^15 but I'm confused because on the solution manual 3.28984 is being multiplied by (1/4 and 1/16) so I am confused on how to get 4 and 16 for the n values.

The values 4 and 16 comes from squaring n=2 and n=4, using the Rydberg equation (En=-hR/n^2).

Another form of the Rydberg equation you can use is:

Frequency = R( (1/(n1)^2) - (1/(n2)^2) )

You would get 1/4 and 1/16 because when you put in the energy levels for n1 and n2(which would be 2 and 4), and then using the Rydberg constant you could then proceed to solve the problem.
