HW 1.7 (speed of light) clarification

Postby Celeste Martinez 1K » Thu Apr 12, 2018 2:06 am

In lecture, I know that Dr. Lavelle mentioned that the speed of light was 3.0 x 10^8 but on the solutions manual, it says 2.998 x 10^8
Does it matter which one we use? Would the latter one be more accurate or preferable?

I think he said to use whatever value the question gives, so on tests he will probably tell us which value to use.

I believe that the speed of light with the exact number of sig-digs preferred by Dr Lavelle is on the formula sheet given to us in tests :)

Always use the most precise information. Dr. Lavelle stated that 3.0 is an rounded figure, the 2.988 will give you a more precise and accurate answers!

The value they use in the textbook I believe is 3.00 x 10^8 but the value difference is so small I don't think it should affect your answer that much.
