### HW chapter 1 question 3

For question 3 in chapter 1's homework, why is C the correct answer?

C is correct because the change in an electric field is depends on the frequency of electromagnetic radiation. As a result, if the electromagnetic radiation has a low frequency, then it will create a small area of electric field and if the electromagnetic radiation has a high frequency, then it will create a large area of electric field. So if the frequency of the electromagnetic radiation is decreasing as said in the question, then the electric field must decrease hence, C is correct.

a) the speed of radiation decreases
b) the wavelength of the radiation decreases
c) the extent of the change in the electrical field at a given point decreases
d) the energy of the radiation increases

Also since we know E=hv, since h is a constant if v(the frequency) decreases then E would decrease so D) is not correct. Going off the other equations we know we can also see that answers A) and B) don't represent the correct relationships between the terms. For A) the speed would not decrease because speed is a constant and for B) the wavelength would increase because c=hv, so if v (the frequency) decreased then h(the wavelength) would have to increase since c is a constant.

If the frequency decreases, the wavelength increases. Since the amplitude or height doesn't change with frequency but the wavelength does, the wave becomes broader or less sloped. Part c is referring to the slope of the wave (the wave is partly a changing electric field).
