### test 2

For test 2, will the questions be only numericals or will we have to answer qualitative questions too?

From my understanding we will be given 8 questions. Some will require calculations while some questions will test our understanding of the concepts because we are only given 40 mintues. I hope this makes sense, that was the information I was given from my TA.

Since this week's discussion worksheet included qualitative questions about the topics, I would say that we are most likely to have some on test 2.

Since some questions might be asking our understanding of topics would that be like knowing where equations come from and what they mean? Or what are some examples of the type of questions that can be asked?

I think the questions will be similar to the examples we did in class and the questions we get for homework.

Yep! It'll just be the quantum world, specifically up to 1.5 in the textbook which covers the wave-particle duality of matter and De Broglie's wave equation.

Will we need to know what kind of electromagnetic radiation was used by finding the wavelength of radiation like in problem 1.33 for the test, or should we just know how to find what the radiation wavelength is?

the test is gonna cover concepts from Chapter 1 problems: 3,5,9,11,13,15,21,23,25,27,33,37,39,41 as stated in the recent email from Lavelle

I would put extra effort into having a full understanding of the concepts. Once you've got calculations down and have done the practice, focus more on the concept behind that calculation. There is no point in practicing redundantly if you don't understand what your calculations mean or what the foundational concepts behind them are.

Because they are trying to keep the test doable timewise, there will be a lot of conceptual questions.

When memorizing the general order of wavelengths of the rays from gamma ray to radio waves, do we need to know the general trend of the wavelengths within the visible light as well as the numerical range for the waves?

You just need to know generally the electromagnetic spectrum so like the different types in relation to each other! I wouldn't really focus too much on numerical ranges.

This was the announcement Professor Lavelle gave for Test 2:
Test 2 covers material covered in Chapter 1 up to the end of 1.5. (wave and photon properties of light; Einstein equation; photoelectric effect; Bohr frequency condition; atomic spectra (electronic transitions); wave and particle properties of electrons, protons, etc.; DeBroglie equation)
