### Interference

Hi! What exactly is constructive interference and destructive interference? I understand the definition though I cannot picture a real life example.

Constructive interference and destructive interference occurs when waves are in phase with another or out-of phase with another to add/subtract the amplitudes. Anything with waves can exhibit if the conditions are right.

To add onto Chem_Mod’s explanation, “in phase” means that two waves are aligned with each other and in the same pattern, “constructing” a bigger wave. “Out of phase” means that the two waves are unaligned, “destructing” the wave into a smaller one. A real life example would be some ocean waves. If there’s two waves traveling in the same pattern, it would build into a larger wave like a constructive interference. On the other hand, if a large wave is “interfered” by a smaller wave that has a different pattern than it, it would result in a smaller wave overall. I hope this makes sense!
