Wave and Particle

How can we differentiate when light is traveling as a wave, or particle?

Re: Wave and Particle

I believe that one photon is a particle of light, but a stream of photons results in a wave of light.

Re: Wave and Particle

Someone said this in another answer and I thought it was really helpful:
"An individual light particle is called a "photon." The flow of photons moves in a wave and have wave characteristics light wavelength and frequency."

Re: Wave and Particle

The photoelectric effect experiment showed that electromagnetic radiation consists of particle-like protons because when light collided with electrons in the metal, electrons were ejected with kinetic energy that is the difference between the energy of the photon and the work function.

Re: Wave and Particle

Light acts as a stream of particles, or photons, in the photoelectric effect. The flow of photons is a wave.

Re: Wave and Particle

Light is made up of photons (photons of light) and these photons move in waves.

Re: Wave and Particle

a single particle of light is called a photon whereas a stream of photons is light

Would you calculate one molecule the same as one photon, in terms of Avogadro's constant?

Re: Wave and Particle

I think we usually refer to photons as singular when we are doing calculations, but if the question asked how much energy was in a mole of photons, you could multiply your answer by avogadro's constant to put it in terms of moles

Re: Wave and Particle

Light acts both as a wave and a particle. You are able to measure both properties.

Re: Wave and Particle

Light has the characteristics of both a wave and a particle. A photon has a wavelength and also contains energy and can dislodge an electron from an atom with enough energy.
