Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

Do we have to memorize the spectrum of different wavelengths and be able to identify which wavelength is which kind of radiation?

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

I believe the spectrum will be given to us...

No, you don't.

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

I wouldn't think so just because most of our tests are usually on application of content rather than memorization.

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

I think during lecture he said we should just know the general order of the spectrum.

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

I think you should remember that the wavelength for visible light is between 400 and 700 nanometers and probably know which ones have short wavelengths (like gamma or x rays) and which ones have long wavelengths (like radio or microwaves)

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

I think you should know which wavelengths correspond to visible light (400 nm -700 nm) and know the order of smallest to longest wavelengths (gamma ray, x-ray, ultraviolet, visible, infrared, microwave, and radio wave)

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

You should know that visible light ranges from 400nm(violet) to 700nm(red). You should also be familiar with the order of the wavelengths of the electromagentic radiation on the spectrum.

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

I don't think you have to memorize the entire spectrum but it would probably be a good idea to have a general sense of what the range for each type of radiation is.

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

You should probably know the visible light range, and which radiations have the highest and lowest frequencies/energies/wavelengths.

I don't think that you have to memorize the spectrum, but I think we would need to know the inverse relationship with frequency and wavelength.

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

You just need to know where light is visible. I do not believe that you will need to memorize every value, that'd be a little absurd.

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

He said just the wavelengths that he discussed during lecture, such as the wavelength range of visible light and UV light.

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

I don't think so, maybe just the visible light range and the general order of the spectrum.

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

I would know the general order of the atomic spectra, but I don't think we will be asked to know what the exact wavelength ranges are for each type of radiation.

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

I believe that it will be important to know the order of the regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, as I feel that questions on ordering waves based on frequency, wavelength, or energy will pop up on the test

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

During my discussion, the TA said that we should have the information required to find the n level. If you have done the A15 exercise in the book though, they says that the wavelenght studied is from the UV spectrum and this should be enought for you to state that it's from the lyman serie with n = 1

I don't think you have to know specifics, but it would probably be a good idea to know the general order of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

He'll most likely provide have that info in the first page of our quizzes/tests. But it's always good to go over it.

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

I think that we would be provided with it, but should at least familiarize and understand it beforehand.
