Photoelectric Effect

Postby ShreyaKannan1B » Sun Oct 13, 2019 6:14 pm

Why does the experiment have to happen in a vacuum?

In a vacuum, there is less of a possibility of interference, so the data from the experiment is more accurate. :)

In a post from a few years ago a TA said that water molecules in the air can scatter frequencies, which would make the measurements inaccurate.

Hope this helps!

Vacuums are useful for reducing the number of molecules in a chamber(such as air or water vapor) so that the results of the test are more accurate and now skewed by environmental interference. It also makes it easier to measure smaller molecules such as electrons or ions as they travel within the vacuum.

any other molecules may interfere with the light and scatter the frequencies making the data less accurate.

in vacuums, we don't see the same interferences as we would in realistic settings

Since a vacuum chamber is a rigid enclosure, less interference occurs and the results can be more accurate.

A vacuum provides a controlled environment where there is less chance of interference with outside factors
