Speed of light value
Hi!
For the speed of light, should we use 3 x 10^8 m/s or be more precise and use 2.998 x 10^8 because I know that in lectures we use 3 x 10^8 m/s but in the textbook they used the other value.

Re: Speed of light value
Hi! I would say to use the 3.00 x 10^8 because this is the value that we've used in the lecture worked example problems and since our professor uses this value, it's probably the safest bet for quizzes and tests! I think the most important thing to worry about is sig figs in the final answer since either number will likely give you the same answer! Hope this helps

Re: Speed of light value
Hi! I agree with Amanda, I think 3 x 10^8 m/s is good. Also since this is a constant I do not think sig figs are relevent becasue constants are considered to be infinitely precise.
Re: Speed of light value
Since it is a constant, the sig figs will not be based on this value so 3 x 10^8 is sufficient.

Re: Speed of light value
I agree that using 3x10^8 should be sufficient due to the usage of significant figures. This is also a given constant value so if there would be a difference, it likely would always be given as 2.998.

Re: Speed of light value
According to the equation sheet that we will be able to use on the midterm, it is 2.99792 x 10^8 m/s, but 3.00 x 10^8 m/s should suffice in most cases.

Re: Speed of light value
it would be more accurate to use 2.99x10^8 but 3x10^8 should be accurate enough for tests.

Re: Speed of light value
In lecture Professor Lavelle used 3.00 x 10^8 m/s, so I believe we are able to use this value for our achieve homework and other worked examples.

Re: Speed of light value
Yes, like what the other folks have said, the actual value is something close to it is 2.99792 x 10^8 m/s. However, we rarely have numbers that have that many sig figs so using 3.00 x 10^8 m/s is fine.

Hey,
I also agree with others and say to use 3.00 x 10^8 since that is the value we have been using in class.

Re: Speed of light value
Even though it'd be more accurate to use 2.99x10^8, 3x10^8 should be accurate enough for tests, quizzes, and assignments. Also note that one of Achieve's features allows any number between an inputted range of numbers to be marked correct as an answer, which tells us that grading probably won't be too pedantic.
Re: Speed of light value
Hi! I had the same question at first too. Someone in the GroupMe said that their TA said 3 x 10^8 is fine.
Re: Speed of light value
Hi! I would also agree to use 3.00 X 10^8 since that is what the professor has been using.
Re: Speed of light value
Hi, I would tend to use 3.0 x 10^8 because while doing long calculations, it would not really make a huge difference. Also we will end up rounding up to the correct number of significant figures anyways.
Re: Speed of light value
We always use 3.00 x 10^8 m/s in lectures, so I would imagine the tests would be the same
Re: Speed of light value
Even though the correct value is about 2.99x10^8 m/s, i believe that we are expected to use 3.00x10^8 m/s because that was the value used during lecture and it is also simpler.

Hi!
Yea we use the 3 x 10^8 m/s in calculations according to the hw set and problems we've been given.

Re: Speed of light value
Hello,
I think the rounded 3.0 would work just fine, but even if you felt the need to use the other value, I think that since the midterm is multiple choice, whether you rounded or not you would be able to see your answer within the bank.

Re: Speed of light value
I think 3.00*10^8 is fine as the professor has been using this value as the speed of light in lecture.

Hi!
I'd say using c = 3.00 x 10^8 m/s is fine since it's the value we've used for worked examples in lecture.

I would use 3 x 10^8 m/s because that is the value on the constants and equations sheet provided to us

Re: Speed of light value
3.00 * 10^8 m/s is usually the most common value to use, however, if it gives you the value for the speed of light in an equation, I would go with that!

Re: Speed of light value
For exams, I would use 2.998*10^8, but on calculations for homework or practice problems, I would more likely use 3.00*10^8.
