How do we calculate the number of spectral lines?

From my understanding (based on the homework) the number of spectral lines can be determined from the number of transitions between energy levels. So for example, if a question asked how many spectral lines would be produced if an excited electron in the n=6 energy level transitioned to energy level n=2, there would be four spectral lines produced. This is because the jump from 6 to 5, 5 to 4, 4 to 3, 3 to 2 all produce a line, thus four lines would be produced for this example.
