Midterm 1 Balmer-Lyman

Postby Natalie Swerdlow 3K » Thu Oct 21, 2021 10:07 pm

Hi,
Do we have to memorize the wavelengths of each spectral line in the Balmer-Lyman series for the midterm?

I believe we should know that the Balmer series are transitions ending at n=2 and produce visible light and Lyman are transitions ending at n=1 and produce UV light. Beyond knowing the range of wavelengths that produce visible light, I don't think there's any need to memorize specifics and electrons of different elements will have different wavelengths for transitions between the same energy levels anyways.
