What is an electromotive force (emf) and what is the maximum potential difference.

Electromotive force (EMF) that refers to the electrical potential difference generated by a source such as a battery or a electrochemical cell. An electrochemical cell converts chemical energy into electrical energy through redox reactions. The EMF of a cell is related to the standard cell potential by the equation:
EMF=Ecell−RT/nF x ln (Q/K)
The maximum potential difference in a single electrochemical cell (without any external resistances or losses) is equal to its standard cell potential.This is the maximum voltage that can be achieved when the cell is not connected to any external circuit.
