Salt bridges/porous discs

Postby Izzy Ick 4B » Sun Jan 31, 2016 4:45 pm

Why is it that the salt bridge/porous disc only allows for the exchange of an ion such as SO4 2- and not a metal ion like Cu2+, like the example in the course reader?

Because it is specific to only allowing SO4 back and forth, from high concentration on the cathode to low concentration on the anode side. It doesn't allow any other substance other than the anion SO4 cross over and it is used to balance the charge.
