Purpose of Salt Bridge

Postby Andrew Ghaly 3H » Thu Feb 04, 2016 7:54 pm

What exactly is the purpose of a salt bridge and what determines what it's made of?
I believe Professor Lavelle touched upon it as a way to balance the concentrations of solutions in each cell (?).

A salt bridge maintains electrical neutrality (charge balance) so the cell does not run the reaction to equilibrium very rapidly. In addition, from page 573 in the textbook, the salt bridge also keeps the solutions from mixing and usually consists of a gel with a concentrated aqueous salt solution in an inverted U-tube. The U-tube, I believe, is typically made of glass.
