14.13b HW Question

Question:Write the half-reactions and the balanced equation for the cell reaction, and the cell diagram for the galvanic cell:
b)Ce^4+(aq)+ I-(aq) -> I2(s) + Ce^3+ (aq)

I understand how to get the half reaction and the balanced equation, but the answer for the cell diagram reads:
Pt(s) |I- (aq) | I2 (s) || Ce4+ (aq), Ce^3+ (aq) | Pt(s)

what is the purpose for putting Pt(s) on both sides, even when there is a solid(I2) on anode side?

The purpose of putting Pt on the side is to set a metal conductor that can transfer elections. Not all solids can conduct electrons, such as I2 which is a nonmetal solid, so we need Pt on anode side to transfer electrons to cathode.
