Ordering Ions in terms of Reducing Power

Postby 104422816 » Mon Feb 08, 2016 6:05 pm

When homework questions ask us to order a list of metals by reducing or oxidizing power, I understand how to use the table to get the E values and to adjust for oxidation but how do I know which ion to choose? for example Cu has about 4 different states all with vastly different E values so how do I know which one to use?

Normally, the problem will tell you the state of the metal they want you to find the value for.
On the midterm, they will probably give you a list of metals and their states and then the cell potential next to each metal, and you will just have to order them correctly.
