Overpotential

Postby laurence14b2f » Sun Mar 17, 2024 11:59 pm

Hello! Can someone elaborate on the concept of overpotential in electrochemistry and its role in determining the efficiency and kinetics of redox reactions within electrochemical cells? Thank you!

Hi! Overpotential is the difference between the theoretical half-reaction reduction potential and the actual voltage required. When present, the applied potential must be increased, making it possible for a different reaction to occur in the electrolytic cell. Hope this helps!
