HW Problem 14.11

Postby ChiragThadaniDis2M » Sat Feb 11, 2017 5:59 pm

Write the half-reactions and the balanced equation for the cell reaction for each of the following galvanic cells:
(b) C(gr)|H2(g)|H+(aq)||Cl-(aq)|Cl2(g)|Pt(s)

Shouldn't the cell diagram look like this:
C(gr)|H2(g)|H+(aq)||Cl2(g)|Cl-(aq)|Pt(s)

because as per standard notation, Cl2 is being reduced to Cl- and not Cl- being oxidized to Cl at the cathode?

Is it a book error or can questions be asked like this and we need to deduce that Cl-(aq)|Cl2(g)|Pt(s) is the reaction taking place at cathode because its written on the right side?

Here's the link to the solution manual error! :)
