Anode and Cathode

Postby Alexia_Vanegas_1G » Sat Mar 18, 2017 11:57 am

How can I figure out which solution and electrode is the anode and which is the cathode?

The anode is side where the oxidation reaction occurs and the cathode is where the reduction reaction occurs. Oxidation involves the loss of electron and reduction involves the gaining of electron. In general, the electrons flow from the anode to the cathode.

I may be remembering incorrectly, but in high school, I remember one side being negative and the other positive, is this convention used? If so which side correlates to which sign? Thanks!!

An easy way to remember this is LANOX and GREDCAT

Lose Electron (L) Anode (AN) Oxidation (OX)
Gain Electron (G) Reduction (RED) Cathode (CAT)

Much like how CATion is a positive ion, and ANion is a negative ion, a cathode is the positively charged electrode, while the anode is the negatively charged electrode.
