Can someone explain the purpose of the salt bridge in the redox reaction?

A salt bridge facilitates counter ion transfer so the solutions stay neutral.

Yes, the salt bridge essentially counters charge buildup as it allows ion transfer. A common salt bridge is a KCl bridge.

In addition, the salt bridge is used to connect two separate electrode compartments and complete the circuit between them; the ion flow back into the compartment with the anode through the salt bridge completes the electrical circuit.
