Self Test 14.5B part a

Postby Hannah Chew 2A » Sat Feb 17, 2018 1:55 pm

Given this cell diagram, write the chemical equation.
Hg(l) / HgCl2(s) / HCl(aq) // Hg2(NO3)2 (aq) / Hg(l)

I checked with the answers in the back of the book, and I don't understand
1) why does Hg2(NO3)2 become 2Hg(l) and 2NO3- instead of 2Hg+ (aq) and 2NO3- ?
2) why does the overall reaction show 2HNO3- instead of 2NO3- like in the individual reaction? I'm guessing the H in HNO3 comes from the H in HCl, but then if that's the case, why doesn't the individual reaction sum up to the overall reaction?

Thank you in advance:D

This is a really good question!
