Volta discovered that when he used different metals in his "pile", some combinations had a stronger effect than others. From that information he constructed an electromotive series. How would Volta have ordered the following metals, if he put the most strongly reducing metal first: Fe, Ag, Au, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Al?

Can someone please explain how we figure out which metals are most strongly reducing? Thank you!

In Appendix 2B, the half-reactions are listed from most strongly oxidizing to most strongly reducing, so half-reactions at the bottom of the right-hand side are the most strongly reducing. From there, the metals can be ordered by most strongly reducing.
