Cell diagram

When do you add an inert metallic component to the cell diagram? If you add one to one electrode, do you have to add it to the other?

You add an inert metallic component (like Pt(s), for example) to the cell with the half reaction that does not have conducting solids. In some reactions, conducting solids such as Zn(s) and Cu(s) are part of the reaction so they make the electrode in that cell and an inert metallic component is not needed. However, if a cell does not have any conducting solids, then an inert metallic component is needed in order to transfer electrons from cell to cell. If the components of the half reaction are in the gaseous, liquid, or aqueous phase, then you definitely need to add an inert conductor to that cell.

Regarding your other question, if you add an inert conductor to one electrode you do not need to add it to another. Only add it to the half reaction cell that does not have conducting solids already.

In question 14.21a, we have mercury. Mercury, while a metal, is liquid at room temp. In the answer key, we dont have a inert metal there. Do we use inert metallic components for all metals?
