Cell Diagrams

Postby RyanTran2F » Sun Feb 18, 2018 6:26 pm

When writing cell diagrams, does the order matter for things on the same side of the ||? Sometimes the book would write it in the same order as it was in the reaction equation (ex. anode side of || would have Au(s) | Au3+ (aq)), but at other times the order would be switched (anode is still on left and cathode on right but the things on anode, for example, may be switched; ex. anode side would have Sn4+ | Sn2+). Also when do you include stuff like H+ in the cell diagram (if it is not being oxidized/reduced; like in 14.19)? Thanks :)

They will be written in the way the reaction takes place so the direction does matter

You should generally see the anode as it goes from the lower oxidation form to the higher oxidation form. Since both Sn4+ and Sn2+ are in the aqueous form, there shouldn't be a solid line between them, and the order would most likely be Sn4+(aq), Sn2+(aq).

And here is more information about writing out cell diagrams: viewtopic.php?t=5239

I believe the order doesn't matter when they are separated with commas, which means they are interchangeable. This is when they are both in the same state such as gas, aqueous, etc.
