Cathode and anode size
Postby RuchaDeshpande1L » Sun Feb 18, 2018 7:32 pm
While doing a few practice problems, I came across a question that asked about "what would be seen at each electrode after some time." The solutions said that the cathode would become "bigger with time" while the anode would become "smaller with time". What exactly does this mean?

Remember that in oxidation, which occurs at the anode, the reactant is a metal solid and the products are an electron and metal ion. In reduction, which occurs at the cathode, an electron and metal ion are the reactants and metal solid is the product. If we are creating metal solid at the cathode, that metal will be added to the metal electrode, so as more reduction occurs, the electrode will grow larger. The opposite occurs at the anode.
