So what exactly is the difference between galvanic cell and electrolytic cell?

Re: galvanic vs electrolytic
According to the textbook a galvanic cell is used to produce electricity while an electrolytic cell uses an electrical current to cause a chemical change however they both are electrochemical cells which is defined as “a system consisting of two electrodes in contact with an electrolyte.”

Re: galvanic vs electrolytic
An electrolytic cell is a cell where an electric current drives a nonspontaneous reaction. A galvanic cell is an electrochemical cell where a spontaneous reaction is used to create an electric current.

Re: galvanic vs electrolytic
A galvanic cell converts chemical energy into electrical energy; an electrolytic cell drives a non-spontaneous redox reaction through the application of electrical energy.
