Salt Bridge

Postby Chew 2H » Tue Feb 20, 2018 2:33 pm

Could someone help explain what exactly happens in the salt bridge as well as with what it does to the reaction? I'm not clear on how the ions gets transferred across it.

The salt bridge is used to maintain the charge balance of the cell. During oxidation, the anode makes electrons and positively charged ions. The electrons move, so there is an unbalanced positive charge. To counteract this and keep neutral, the negatively charged ions from the salt bridge move into the anode half cell, and the reverse happens with a cathode cell.
