I believe that there is no advantage to using a salt bridge over a porous membrane. Both work by allowing the charged ions to move from one solution to another in order to keep the charge flowing. If there was no salt bridge, the charged ions (say, Fe3+) would accumulate in one beaker and no electrical charge would continuously flow.
