Questions in the second test

Postby Yiwei Zhou 2I » Thu Mar 15, 2018 1:31 pm

Q: Rank the following in order of increasing oxidizing power.

a).Mn,Ag,Ti

Could someone answer this question and also explain the solving process?
Thanks so much!

for an element to have high oxidizing power, it would have to have a more positive value for reduction potential. This is because the higher the reduction potential, the better the element is at being reduced. An element that is being reduced is called the oxidizing agent because it is accepting electrons from the other element in the reactant which is being oxidized. Because of this, we would rank them in the order Ti, Mn, Ag, because that is the order in which their standard reaction potentials more negative to more positive (least to greatest).

The same goes for the other way around, the lower a substance's reduction potential, the better of a reducing agent it is
