Rule when writing cell diagrams?

Postby Emily Glaser 1F » Fri Mar 16, 2018 10:50 pm

What's the rule behind writing a cell diagram equation when I have H+ or OH- present in my overall redox reaction? Do I include H+/OH-? How do I include them?

I think the same rules applies as any other ion, if they are in the same phase, use a comma and the side that they come out on depends on whether they are used in the anode as reactants or produced in the cathode as products.
HOWEVER, I AM NOT 100 PERCENT CONFIDENT SO.....

How can you tell which side a cathode or anode is on in a cell diagram?

In a cell diagram, the left side should be the anode, and the right side should be the cathode.

The most negative cell potential is the anode in a galvanic cell in order to make E positive.

From what I understand H+ and OH- ions are included in the diagram, but their product (H2O) is not included since the reactions occur in aqueous conditions and water is the solute.
