The salt bridge facilitates electron flow between the two electrodes. Essentially, as the reaction progresses, electrons will move from the anode to the cathode. Without a salt bridge, all the electrons would be transferred to the cathode, stopping the reaction. With the salt bridge, electrons can flow back to the anode, allowing the reaction to continue.
Ultimately, a salt bridge is what helps maintain a battery and allows it to work. When adding a salt bridge, it the elements K+ favors the cathode and CL- favors the anion, and helps the stabilize the flow of electrons between the two.
Why is it favorable for the ions to flow through the salt bridge to the anode from the cathode? Is it because the electron flow from the anode to the cathode makes the cathode negatively charged the cathode negatively charged and the anode positively charged, thus making the salt bridge ion flow favorable as a way to balance the charges?
