How does the salt bridge work in a battery? what way do the ions flow?

A salt bridge maintains the electrical neutrality of a battery. Negative ions would flow into the left compartment while positive ions would flow into the right compartment.

The main role of a salt bridge is to maintain neutrality in the cathode and the anode so the flow of electrons is continuous.

Do the two vertical lines in the notation represent the salt bridge?
