Anode and Cathode

If you are given a reaction how can you tell which one is the anode and which one is the cathode?

Whichever ion undergoes oxidation is the anode and whichever ion undergoes reduction is the cathode.

I use the mneumonic "An Ox" (Anode, Oxidation) and "Red Cat" (Reduction, Cathode) to keep them straight

anode is oxidized and contributes electrons whereas cathode is reduced

In a cell, electrons move from the anode to the cathode. This is because electrons are lost at the anode, where oxidation occurs, and are gained at thee anode, where reduction occurs.

Cations (positively charged molecules) gain electrons from the cathode, which is where reduction takes place. Contrarily, anions (negatively charged molecules) lose electrons at the anode, which is where oxidation takes place. Remember OIL RIG.

Electrons always flow from the anode to the cathode or from the oxidation half cell to the reduction half cell- from negative to positive.

In a galvanic (voltaic) cell are the cathode and anode the same as in an electrolytic cell?
