Order in Cell Diagrams

Postby Seohyun Park 1L » Mon Feb 25, 2019 1:12 pm

When writing cell diagrams and you use commas (when the components are in the same phase), does the order matter? For example, is there a difference between Cu2+ (aq), Cu4+ (aq) and Cu4+ (aq), Cu2+ (aq)?

I believe the convention on the left would be to write it in the order of oxidation (anode) and on the right would be to write in the order of reduction (cathode) if that makes any sense.
So if Cu2+ were to be oxidized to Cu4+, you would write Cu2+,Cu4+.

Oxidation (from reactants), oxidation (from products) II reduction (from reactants), reduction (from products).
Separate with comma for same states
Sperate with I when different states
