what is the necessity of the salt bridge/what does it do?

Since the electrons flow from anode to cathode, the anode side of the reaction will become more positive and there will be a build up of negative charge in the cathode which slows the reaction/flow of e-. To balance the charges and allow the reaction to keep continuing there has to be a salt bridge/porous disc that allows ions(anions) to flow into the anode side to balance the charge loss of electrons.
