H+ and OH

Why are H+ and OH included in the cell diagram if they are not included in the original equation and are just used to balance and sometimes cancel out?

I believe it's because H+ and OH- are part of the redox reaction even if they are not explicitly mentioned in the original equation (it will say whether the reaction is in a basic or acidic solution to indicate that H+ and OH- are involved).

Because H+ and OH- are not being reduced or oxidized, they are normally left out of the skeleton equation. However, they are still present in the aqueous solutions which is why they are included in cell diagrams.

Sometimes in the homework, the solutions would include KOH instead of OH. Is there a reason for this and should we include salts in our cell diagrams too?
