Cell Diagram Order

Can someone explain the order of a cell diagram better than the textbook? It's very confusing because the books states that the anode and cathode can be interchanged on the right depending on the sign if the Ecell, yet only reductions occur on the right. Earlier the text also says that the cathode is the site for reduction and the anode is the site for oxidation, yet you can just flip the redox reactions and change which one is being oxidized and which is being reduced. I'm completely lost trying to follow the circular reasoning of the book. Is there any less confusing way to do this, or at least memorize the correct way to write the cell diagrams?

The anode is always oxidation and goes on the left. The cathode is always reduction and goes on the right.
In general the format is:

electrode on the anode side| oxidation half reaction || reduction half reaction| electrode on cathode side
