Salt Bridge and function
Can someone explain how salt bridge functions? What would happen without the salt bridge?

The salt bridge allows the charges of the two compartments to remain neutral. Without the salt bridge, one compartment would become negatively charged and the other would become positively charged and the battery/galvanic cell would stop working(there would be no flow of electrons)

The salt bridge allows the charges between the anode and cathode to be the same. As the cathode gains electrons from the anode, the buildup of electrons on the cathode would eventually stop the flow of electrons.

Yes, and it's important to note that when there is that buildup of charge and the battery is "dead", the system is at equilibrium so the gibbs is zero and there is no energy for useful work

The salt bridge is to maintain charge balance because electrons move from 1 half cell to another.
