Dead Battery

Can someone explain when a battery is dead in terms of what we discussed in lecture today? Thank you.

A battery is dead when the system is at equilibrium. This occurs when there is a buildup of charge in the cathode and the anode, so there will no longer be any flow of charge. This can be avoided by having something like a porous disk to maintain a neutral state in the anode and cathode.

The absence of the flow of electrons or charge between the anode and cathode can also be solved by using a salt bridge!

The system will reach equilibrium where the charges will no longer flow. In terms of a galvanic cell, adding a salt bridge can keep the system "neutral" and allow charges to keep flowing rather than build up.

For a galvanic cell, a battery is also dead when you run of out metal in the anode. If Zn has to give off 2 electrons to become Zn2+ to power the battery, then your battery will die when you run out of Zn metal, since all you are left with is Zn2+ ion.

The battery is dead when there is no more flow between the anode and the cathode, but this can be prevented with a salt bridge.

A battery goes dead when the reaction inside has reached equilibrium ( the transfer of net charge has stopped).
