Potential Difference

Postby Riya Sood 4G » Fri Feb 21, 2020 6:58 am

What is meant by potential difference and what is it telling us about the cell?

The potential difference is the difference in the standard reduction potentials between the two half cells. When the potential difference of the overall cell is positive, you can expect that the overall cell reaction (Transfer of electrons from anode to cathode) is favorable. When the potential difference is negative, you will expect that the reverse of the cell reaction is favorable.

Potential difference = work/charge. From this you can derive Wmax=deltaG=-nFE which can tell you if the reaction is favorable or not.
