Salt bridges are used to help balance out the charge in voltaic cells. As the oxidation reaction gives away the electrons from the left cell (the anode) to the right cell (the cathode), the solid metal becomes an ion that is dissolved into the solution it is placed in. Vice versa, the solution in the cathode receives the electrons and causes the ions in the solution to become part of the solid metal in the solution. With the amount of ions in the solution increasing (in the anode) and decreasing (in the cathode), the solution in the anode will become more positively charged and the solution in the cathode will become more negatively charged. Therefore the salt bridge will release its Na+ ions into the cathode to help balance out the charge change in the solution while the salt bridge releases Cl- ions into the anode.
