relevance of salt bridge

Postby Ryan Yoon 1L » Fri Feb 21, 2020 11:48 pm

Why do we put a porous/salt bridge in beakers that have the cathode and anode?

A salt bridge will allow ion transfer without charge buildup (which stops electron transfer from one reaction beaker to another) because it allows the two solutions to stay neutral.

The purpose of the salt bridge is to maintain charge balance because the electrons are moving from one-half cell to the other.

The salt bridge allows ion transfer and keeps the two solutions neutral.

Does the porous disk/wall do the same thing as the salt bridge?

Salt bridges are used in order for the two solution of the Galvanic cell to remain neutral. This is done by allowing ions, such as Cl-, to transfer from the side of the anode, to the side of the cathode.

Salt bridges allow for electron flow between beakers.

salts have the ability to transfer electrons so a salt bridge allows the flow of electrons from one side to the other

A salt bridge essentially allows the "circuit" to be complete. It allows for a constant flow of charge without an immediate stop as a result of charge build-up. It essentially balances charge in ot=rder to keep the system going.

Salt bridges are meant to maintain charge as the electrons are transferred from the anode to cathode
