Max Potential

How is the max potential calculated and why does it occur when very little current flows?

If you are referring the to the max cell potential, it is simply represented by E. This can be calculated using -work/charge or delta G = -nFE (or work = -nFE), where work is the max work that can be done from the transfer of charge.

The max cell potential is E = -work/charge. It can also be calculated by finding the the maximum work, which is Wmax = ΔG = -nFE. They're equivalent because the max potential is related to the free energy difference between the reactants and products in a cell. This also why we can still calculate the max potential even if there's very little flow.
