Cell Diagrams

What are the different separations in the cell diagrams? Why do you sometimes use commas, bars, and double bars?

If there is one line, then that represents an interface between phases that are in contact with each other such as a porous disc or wall. If there is two lines, then that represents a salt bridge.

Commas means that the state did not change. One line represents state change. Two lines represent the salt bridge.

, for species in same phase, | for species in different phase, || salt bridge or porous disk

The single bar represent the species that has undergone a state change, while the double bar is a salt bridge. The double line is usually also used to separate the anode/oxidation reaction from the cathode/reduction equation. You use the commas when there is no phase change, and you would add a single bar if you are adding a metal such as platinum.

The | separates phases (Solid, aqueous, gas) and the || means a salt bridge and can also separate the anode and cathode.

Keep in mind that the species on the left of the double bar (the salt bridge) is not always the anode, and the species on the right of the double bar is not always the cathode. To determine which one is which, you have to determine the flow of the electrons by writing half reactions.

Hope this helped!

"||" = salt bridge while "|" = phase change
