Electrolyte
What is meant by the term electrolyte? I've seen it in a lot of electrolysis problems in the book but never saw the definition in the context of electrolysis.

Re: Electrolyte
An electrolyte is something that dissolves into ions when placed in a solution such as water.

Re: Electrolyte
To add on, an electrolyte is a substance that dissolves in water or any other polar solvent and creates an electrically conducting solution. When the electrolyte dissolves, it spilts into a cation and an anion species.

Re: Electrolyte
In addition, to be an electrolyte, a substance doesn't have to completely dissolve in a solvent. Strong electrolytes would completely dissolve, whereas weak electrolytes would only partially dissolve.
